Many folks aren’t thrilled at seeing doctors for tooth loss. In fact, some people would prefer to fix their smile gaps themselves. These potential patients find a do-it-yourself solution far more appealing. Still, you may wonder: are DIY replacement teeth safe? That these substitutes don’t involve dentists can seem worrying. Well, your Chesapeake dental practice can answer your pressing question. Read on to learn about DIY teeth, their risks, and why to leave smile restoration to dentists.

Just What *Are* DIY Replacement Teeth?

On sites like X and TikTok, some users promote their own makeshift dental products. DIY replacement teeth are examples of such items.

DIY replacement teeth act as store-bought substitutes for the ones you lost. In recent years, they’ve become popular among certain groups for having (relatively) low prices. These “replacements” are also liked due to their accessibility – you can find them in pharmacies, drug stores, online marketplaces, etc.

Generally, there are three types of DIY replacement teeth. These are:

  • Melted Polymers – In certain circles, beads made of a polymer material serve as substitute teeth. They can be melted and altered into tooth-like shapes.
  • Moldable Wax or Paste – People can shape moldable wax without melting it. The substance is then applied to (and thus fills out) a broken tooth.
  • Orthodontic Wax – When low on funds, some people may place orthodontic wax where they’ve lost a tooth.

DIY “Teeth” Aren’t a Good Idea

Whatever their supporters may say, DIY tooth replacements aren’t safe. These store-bought items cause health issues and don’t address your needs.

Firstly, DIY “teeth” use unsafe ingredients. The FDA doesn’t support placing them in your mouth. If you do so, you’ll likely have an adverse reaction.

Worse yet, these items don’t stop the effects of tooth loss. Polymers and waxes can’t stimulate your jaw enough to preserve bone tissue. They aren’t even sturdy enough to keep your other teeth from tilting or falling.

Why Leave Smile Restoration to Dentists?

Due to their dangers, you should avoid DIY replacement teeth. The better solution for tooth loss is to see a dentist.

To be honest, a dentist’s prosthetic teeth always use safe materials. Dentures, bridges, and dental implants never use anything toxic or harmful to your mouth. So, these options shouldn’t cause any damage to your oral health.

Restorations from dentists are also highly effective. After all, these devices are lifelike and blend seamlessly with the rest of your smile. Dental implants are excellent in this regard. By fusing with your jaw, they work like natural teeth.

In the future, don’t rely on DIY replacement teeth. See your dental provider to restore your grin quickly!
